The Shell Comes First
Size the Shift 2 by shell truth, not by comfort fantasy. Strip the liner, drop the foot in, and check the clearance behind the heel. That gap sets the baseline: race snug, performance snug, or already a compromise.
A precise alpine fit lives in the shell before the liner gets any say. If the shell is wrong, the liner only hides the problem.

How the Shift 2 Should Land on Foot
The Shift 2 should lock the heel without crushing the Achilles, seat the midfoot without white-knuckle pressure, and keep the toes alive in a neutral stance. You are chasing containment, not suffocating contact.
Three zones decide the fit:
- Toebox: Enough room to wiggle under no-load stance, but not enough to let the foot surf forward under pressure.
- Instep: Firm contact with no sharp bite across the top of the foot, because that is where blood flow gets strangled first.
- Heel pocket: Locked, quiet, minimal movement. Heel lift here wrecks edge precision faster than almost any other fit error.
Mondo Size Is Only the Label
Mondo sizing gives the foot a length number, nothing more. It does not describe shell volume, instep height, or whether the forefoot is cut for a narrow, medium, or wider platform. Two boots in the same mondo size can fit like different species.
Treat the Shift 2 as a shell geometry problem first and a size tag second. Length matters, but so do girth, arch height, ankle volume, and whether your foot shape cooperates with the shell or fights it every turn.
When to Stay True to Size
Stay in your true mondo size if you want a performance fit with close heel retention and a shell that you can fine-tune instead of chase.
- Your foot volume is normal to low, so it fills the boot without excess dead air.
- You can tolerate firm toe contact in a standing stance, as long as the toes free up when you flex.
That is the alpine mindset: tight enough to drive the ski, not so tight it strangles circulation and turns the forefoot numb.
When to Size Up
Go up a size only when the shell fails structurally, not because the boot feels harsh on the carpet.
- Your toes are jammed hard against the front in a neutral stance and still crushed when flexed.
- The instep is crushed so aggressively that closing the buckles becomes a fight.
- The shell cannot be punched or relieved enough to fix the pressure without destroying hold elsewhere.
A bigger shell is a blunt instrument, not a cure. It often trades pain for a loose heel, a sloppy ankle, and a boot that skis like wet cardboard after the liner packs out.
The Liner Will Lie
Liners are foam; foam compresses. A boot that feels "okay" in the shop may turn vague after a few hard days, and a boot that feels firm on minute one may be the correct call once the liner beds in.
That is the trap. Beginners buy comfort. Strong skiers buy shape.
If the shell is right, the liner should feel slightly accusatory at first. If it feels plush and forgiving on day one, there is a good chance it will get sloppy fast.
Pressure Points That Matter
Not every tight spot is a problem. The dangerous ones are.
Red-flag pressure zones:
- Toe pressure that never settles and starts to kill nerve response.
- Instep crush that pinches blood flow.
- Bony ankle bite that cannot be relieved with heat molding or shell work.
- Forefoot splay crush that locks the toes into one position and burns under load.
Acceptable pressure zones:
- Light toe brush in a standing stance.
- Firm midfoot contact.
- Heel and ankle containment that feels aggressive but stable.
That line separates a real fit from a boot that just feels "snug."
What the Shift 2 Should Feel Like on Snow
On snow, the Shift 2 should transmit movements without lag. The heel should stay planted through short-radius turns, the forefoot should stay connected without smashing, and the instep should not light up after a few chairlifts.
A good fit feels demanding in the shop and clean on snow. A bad fit feels cozy inside and messy everywhere else.
If you are swimming in the heel, control degrades. If the toes are getting destroyed, stance collapses. If the instep is strangled, the boot becomes a pressure chamber instead of a tool.
The Real Decision Tree
Choose the size that delivers:
- Minimal shell excess
- Firm heel lock
- Controlled forefoot contact
- Manageable instep pressure
- Room to punch where needed, not room to bail out.
Reject the size that shows:
- Obvious heel lift.
- Excess forefoot dead space.
- Instep pain that blocks buckle closure.
- Toe crush that does not improve with proper flex posture.
Fit Before Fantasy
The best ski boot is not the one that sounds comfortable under shop lights. It is the one that survives three hours of hard skiing without turning your foot into a hostage.
The Shift 2 should be sized as a performance boot, not a casual shoe. Lock the heel, respect the instep, keep the toes alive, and make the shell earn its keep.
